A photo-etched detail set in 1:35 scale from the Czech maker Eduard, whose production base is in Obrnice near Most. The set belongs to the full photo-etched line, not to the narrower Zoom line. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory meant to give a model built from a plastic kit finer and more accurate detail. The base kit is obtained separately.
A plastic kit runs into the limits of its technology on thin parts: grilles, brackets, clamping straps, protective cages for the lights or details of the tools have to be thicker in plastic than the real subject would call for. Photo-etched metal sheet has a real thickness, so once replaced these parts look more convincing. On a subject like the M48A5, which carries plenty of small external equipment on the hull and the turret, the difference shows above all where a viewer shines a light close up.
The M48A5 is a late upgrade stage of the American medium tank of the M48 family. The vehicles were rearmed with a 105 mm gun, that is the weapon adopted on the newer family of tanks, and received a number of further changes to the running gear and the equipment. The result was a machine that stayed in service considerably longer than the original design had assumed, including with a number of foreign users.
Cut photo-etched parts on a hard surface with a sharp knife, and do not break them out by twisting. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bender. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint flakes off. Fine grilles come out after a dark wash, and metal wear can be suggested with graphite or a very restrained drybrush.
This is an add-on set, not a model of the tank. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
