About product

M983 Tractor with the AN/TPY-2 radar in the X band, 1:35 - Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from the maker Trumpeter, which joins the heavy army tractor M983 with a semi-trailer carrying the AN/TPY-2 radar working in the X band. The set is extensive - it holds the vehicle on its own as well as the whole radar assembly with a rotating antenna face. A decal sheet and instructions are part of the package. The finished model belongs among the above-average long pieces in 1:35 scale and suits a roomier display case rather.

The real subject

The M983 is the tractor version of the heavy army truck of the HEMTT series with all-wheel drive in an 8x8 layout, used by the armed forces of the United States to carry and tow demanding loads in terrain. The AN/TPY-2 radar is a transportable surveillance and guidance radar with an active electronically scanned array working in the X band. It forms the sensor part of a missile defense system and is used in two modes - as a forward-based sensor for the early detection and tracking of ballistic targets, or in terminal mode for guiding interceptors. The assembly is designed to be transportable, so that it can be deployed within a short time.

Building and painting tips

Assemble the frame of the tractor and the chassis of the semi-trailer on a flat surface and keep checking that the combination stands on all its wheels. Paint the chassis groups before they are closed. The antenna face of the radar is the largest flat area of the model - it pays to paint it separately, so that the paint dries without fingerprints, and to attach it only at the end; at the same time consider whether you want to leave it movable. Spray the base coat with an airbrush over a primer, on contemporary American hardware usually in a sand or green shade according to the chosen scheme. Keep the patina sparing - hardware of this kind tends to be maintained; fine dust on the wheels and the lower parts and a light accenting of the panel transitions with a wash are enough.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who focus on contemporary American hardware
  • Anyone interested in radar and support systems, not only in combat vehicles
  • Builders of large display case pieces and of scenes with hardware in the field
  • More experienced modelers - the set is extensive and demanding on space

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

It is a combination of a tractor with a semi-trailer in 1:35 scale, so count on a markedly longer piece than an ordinary tank model.

Yes, the set is extensive and holds both the complete vehicle and the radar assembly. Previous experience is worth having.
