Among diorama bases, subjects from the twentieth century predominate, so a medieval gate is a welcome departure in the Black Dog range. The base in 1:35 scale offers a setting for historical figures, which are otherwise displayed on a plain plinth without any context at all. You are not buying a kit of a castle or a gateway; this is a ready scenic ground.
A gate is a passage, and a passage always tells a story. The viewer automatically imagines who is going through it and from where to where. At the same time it creates a frame into which a figure is placed as into a picture. The forms of a gate also naturally lead the eye upward, so even a lower composition gains an impression of monumentality.
Medieval masonry was made of irregular pieces, so a uniform shade would give the scene away. Mix several close tones for yourself and paint stone by stone, then even the boundaries between them out with a glaze. Apply the moss and the mold patches only where the rain would not have fallen on the masonry directly, that is in the lower areas and toward the north side. Pick out the chipped edges with a lighter color applied with the edge of a brush.
