The Merkava is an Israeli main battle tank that was designed from the start differently from most of its contemporaries. The engine is at the front, so it forms another layer of protection for the crew, and at the rear there is a compartment with a door through which the crew can climb in, ammunition can be replenished or a wounded man can be evacuated.
