A set of photo-etched parts in brass sheet for a plastic model of the American main battle tank M60A1 in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle, but an accessory: it is fitted to a kit under construction and replaces parts that an injection mold can only manage in a simplified way. The target kit is the Takom 2132.
The M60A1 has a cast hull and turret with smooth surfaces, against which everything made of sheet and wire stands out all the more: the protective baskets of the headlights, the mesh and louvers above the engine compartment, the stowage baskets on the rear of the turret, the grab handles, the eyes and the rims of the fenders. The protective baskets of the headlights are a textbook example — a real basket is made of thin rods and you can see the glass of the lamp between them. In plastic it tends to be a solid cup with suggested ribs. The mesh above the power pack comes out the same way, with nothing in plastic but a grid you cannot see through.
With three-dimensional assemblies such as the baskets it is worth considering what you will join them with. Cyanoacrylate glue is available, fast and entirely sufficient for the vast majority of builders; its weakness is the brittleness of the joint when it is flexed and the white film that occasionally appears around a surplus. Soldering with a micro soldering iron and low-melt solder gives a joint that can be sanded and that survives flexing, but it calls for flux, practice and nerve — and it must not get near plastic, because plastic melts before you notice. A sensible compromise: solder the three-dimensional assemblies separately, away from the model, and then glue the finished whole onto the plastic with cyanoacrylate glue. After soldering, wash the part thoroughly, so that the remains of the flux do not eat into the paint.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
