This is a set of small resin castings of small arms in the military 1:35 scale. Weapons of this kind find a use in several places in a modeling scene: in the hands of figures, propped against a crate, hung on the wall of a vehicle fighting compartment or lying in rubble as part of the storytelling of a diorama. The castings replace the softly shaped plastic weapons from boxed kits, which tend to be simplified and have coarse parting lines.
The assault rifle designed in the postwar Soviet Union is among the most widespread small arms of the twentieth century. Its characteristic features are the curved magazine, a wooden or pressed stock, the gas piston above the barrel and simple mechanics that tolerate dust and mud. Over the decades a great many derived versions appeared, differing in the stock, the material of the handguard and the length of the barrel, so the word family in the name refers to exactly that variability.
The castings are thin and the barrels break off easily; take them out of the casting system with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw and work over a surface from which a small part can be found again. Degrease the surface before painting. They come out best with a contrast between dark metal and a warm shade of wood; a final dark flow into the engraving will bring out the outline of the magazine and the sights. Dry brushing the edges will give a weapon a worn look.
