The photo-etched set in 1:35 scale from the Czech maker Hauler is prepared for the kit of the closed sedan given in the name of the product. You are buying an accessory, not a model. The reason to reach for photo-etch on passenger cars is simple: an injection mold cannot make a part thinner than about half a millimeter, which in 1:35 scale is over a centimeter of real thickness. The radiator grille, the frames, the wipers and the handles therefore always look swollen in plastic, whereas photo-etched sheet holds a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter.
The Opel Olympia was a German passenger car of the lower middle class of the second half of the 1930s, one of the first series-produced European cars with a unitary body. The closed version became an ordinary car of private and official users alike, and in this form it appears in period photographs of towns and country roads, which makes it a rewarding civilian element for a diorama.
Leave the photo-etched sheet whole as long as you can and separate the parts from it only at the moment of assembly - a small part loose on the table has a tendency to disappear. Cut on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel, not by bending it back and forth. Make the bends over a metal edge and never over a fingernail. Use super glue in gel for the joints, which gives you time to line the part up. Build the body of the sedan in the knowledge that a glossy surface will expose every unevenness: sand, prime, thin coats of paint, finally a gloss varnish and only discreet weathering, so that the car stays civilian.
The set completes a kit; it is not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
