A basic set of photo-etched parts for models of the Chinese ZTZ-99 and upgraded ZTZ-99A main battle tanks in 1:35 scale. The metal parts are incomparably thinner than plastic castings and they replace them where the thickness of the material shows most: on the fenders, the covers, the cooling grilles, the brackets and the small external equipment. It is not a kit of the tank but an addition to a finished plastic model.
The ZTZ-99 is a Chinese third-generation main battle tank which appeared with the People's Liberation Army around the turn of the millennium. It carries a 125 mm smoothbore gun with an autoloader and a welded turret with modular armor. The ZTZ-99A version brought a reworked turret with a different shape of front, further protective features and upgraded electronics. Both versions appear side by side at parades and in training and they differ mainly on the turret, so before the build it is good to know which of them you are building.
Cut the parts off the fret with a scalpel on a hard surface, because breaking them out will deform the edge. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, so that they are straight. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire, and less is always better, because an excess will flood the detail. Bare metal will not hold paint, so always use a primer. The fenders can be slightly bent before gluing, or a scuffed edge suggested. The surface of Chinese equipment tends to be markedly dusty in service, so it pays to finish with dust pigment.
This is an accessory set, not a kit of the tank. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
