Drums to fill a scene

A set of plastic drums in 1:35 scale. Containers are among the accessories that do a great deal of work on a diorama for very little room: stood against a wall, loaded on a cargo bed or tossed into the corner of a workshop, they give a scene content and at the same time tell you what the place is for. Drums also work well as a scale guide, because a viewer judges their size without having to think about it.

Where it fits

Plastic drums belong in modern scenes, that is in workshops, stores, construction sites, yards and unit support areas. Beside military vehicles they come into their own in civilian settings too. In a scene from the first half of the twentieth century they would, on the contrary, look out of place; there sheet metal drums have their place.

Building and painting tips

• Try the arrangement dry and only then fix the drums in place.
• The right glue follows from the material of the parts; the material and the procedure are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and the paint will then hold noticeably better.
• Do not stand all the drums the same way; one laid on its side or dented will bring a scene to life.
• Plastic ages differently from metal: it does not rust but rather gets scuffed, soiled and faded by the sun.

Who it is for

For builders of dioramas and cabinet scenes in 1:35 scale who need to fill the area around a vehicle with the things that really lie about in such a place.
