A set of figures of Polish cavalrymen, uhlans, in 1:35 scale. The figures match the equipment of the Polish army of the end of the 1930s.

Polish cavalry almost always enters the public mind through a scene that never happened: a charge of horsemen with sabers against tanks. At the village of Krojanty on the first of September 1939 a mounted charge did indeed take place, but it was directed against resting German infantry and it succeeded; the armored cars arrived only afterward. Foreign journalists who came to the battlefield a day later imagined the rest, and the story took hold for decades.
By the 1930s it was mobile infantry on horseback. The riders moved in the saddle but fought dismounted, with rifles, machine guns and anti-tank rifles; the saber remained more a matter of tradition and ceremonial dress. It is exactly that duality which makes the uhlans a rewarding subject, because in one unit the old meets the new.
Figures call for a different method from military vehicles. Paint the faces separately and from below, that is from the darkest shade toward the lit places; once they are finished, the rest goes quickly. On the uniform it pays to keep a uniform, rather faded tone and to create the differences only with shadows in the folds, not by changing the base color.
They work well by a light tank, by a field gun or simply at the edge of a village road. Arrange the group so that the figures look toward one point; the scene then holds together. A few small things around them, a discarded blanket or a bucket, give the scene its action and keep the figures from reading as samples displayed on a shelf.
