This diorama base takes its subject from an abandoned metro and falls within the fantasy line that Black Dog builds on post-apocalyptic motifs. It offers a ready-made setting into which the modeler seats a figure, a pair of figures or a smaller piece of equipment. It depicts no machine itself; it is a backdrop, not a model of a vehicle.
Building an underground space from scratch means cutting tiling, layering crumbling plaster and watching the slope of the platform edge. A finished section skips that stage and the time goes straight into the character of the scene. A bounded area also holds the composition together: the viewer's eye has somewhere to go and a lone figure does not look lost.
The underground lives on gloom, so it works to start from a dark tone and build the light upward. A dry brush will pull out the edges of the tiling and the broken pieces of masonry, and a dark glaze will settle into the joints and deepen them. Dust can be added with pigment applied dry, and wet patches on the floor can be suggested with a gloss gel. It pays to keep to a limited palette, because a harmonized gray with two accents reads more convincingly than a motley mixture.
