A base with a vertical wall is one of the most versatile pieces a diorama modeler can own. A wall set behind a figure closes off the view, separates the model from the back of the display case and gives the whole an architectural dimension that a flat area on its own will never have.
A vertical surface behaves like a canvas: it carries peeling plaster, holes left by anchors and, if you like, lettering you add yourself. Do not stand the figure exactly in the middle of it but to one side – an empty space appears that lightens the composition. Lighting the case from the side will then pull out the relief of the surface far better than light coming from the front.
Paint exposed brickwork brick by brick with a slight variation of shade and then even the joints out with a light glaze. A filter that mutes the contrast suits the plaster, along with a darker veil at the foot of the wall, where water splashes up from the ground. Always draw damp streaks from the top downward, never across, or the impression of natural aging disappears.
The piece is finished with paint to suit your own idea and links up easily with further terrain once you close the edges off with modeling putty.
