A masonry wall is an unobtrusive but decisive element in a diorama. It gives the scene scale, closes off the background and above all gives the viewer a reason why a figure stands just where it stands. This casting measures 12.5 by 6.5 centimeters and joins three things at once: an area of fired brick masonry, two load-bearing pillars at the sides and a strip of flat roof covering on top.
At 1:35 scale the longer dimension matches roughly four and a half meters of real length. It is thus a piece of boundary or farm wall of the kind you meet in a European country yard from Normandy to the Balkans, and that is just why it suits the overwhelming majority of ground subjects.
The damage is modeled into the casting already and it is not one token groove. Fissures run across the masonry, some of the bricks are crumbled and the upper edge is irregularly broken. For a modeler that means saving the riskiest work, because damaging a finished part by hand often turns out worse than the subject.
The word primed in the name says that the part already has a base coat. The step which on absorbent surfaces decides everything else thus falls away, and paint can be applied straight off. The procedure that works best runs from a dark filter into the joints through drybrushing the edges to picking out individual bricks in a different shade. It is just the unevenness of the individual pieces that makes a wall convincing, because real fired bricks never have a uniform color.
