Wear is what makes a scene believable

A new, unblemished surface on a model almost never looks real. A real floor carries the marks of use: it is worn down most in the middle and by the door, while by the walls and in the corners it stays better preserved, because nobody walks there. Once you suggest that difference on a diorama, the surface stops coming across as an area and begins to tell how the room was lived and worked in.

Tips for believable wear

• Run the heaviest dirt in a band between the door and the main space of the room.
• Leave the surface cleaner in the corners and under the furniture; use does not show there.
• Apply the pigments in thin layers and step back from time to time to look the scene over.
• Suggest damp only locally, by a wall or under a damaged ceiling.
• Derive the shades of the dirt from the surrounding terrain, so that the scene holds as a whole.
