A diorama accessory from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene. The laser-cut fence of real wood has vertical boards whose upper ends are cut at an angle — a simple and in practice common solution that protects the end grain of the board from water. The fence therefore looks utilitarian, with no ornament, and suits yards, farm buildings, stores and the fencing of plots along roads. It is not a model of a vehicle or of figures, but an element of a scene.
The parts are released from the sheet with a sharp scalpel and the remains of the tabs are sanded with fine abrasive paper. They are glued with white PVA wood glue, and small joints take gel cyanoacrylate. The wood is absorbent, so it is best painted with a wood stain or with heavily thinned acrylic glazes in coats; grayish and brown-gray tones capture weathered wood well. The angled cuts are worth bringing out with a dry brush — they are where the lighter wear shows up most. Darken the gaps with a wash and dust the bottoms of the boards with pigment, so that the fence grows out of the terrain.
An angled cut wears and grays faster over time than the rest of a board, which is a rewarding detail for a dry brush. The fence also calls for contact with its surroundings — grass and weeds at the foot, wheel tracks and a worn path alongside it, perhaps a tool or a sack leaning against it. Let one or two boards work loose or lean as well.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The glue, the paints and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
