A road with a trailer, a 1:35 base joins a roadway with a parked vehicle. It brings action and a calm area into a display at the same time.

A section of roadway with a parked trailer, 1:35 scale, from the Black Dog diorama range. Joining a roadway with a parked vehicle gives a display action and a calm area at the same time.
A road leads the viewer's eye through a scene and establishes where the display takes place. A trailer beside it reads as a halt in movement, a situation a figure or a towing vehicle is easily set into. Leave the rest of the area rather empty; space works in your favor here.
Neither asphalt nor paving is a uniform gray. Apply a base, then break the surface up with several slightly different tones and give the patches a sharper transition. Dust and oil gather in the wheel tracks and soil along the shoulder; it is exactly this transition between the roadway and its surroundings that decides credibility more than the shade itself.
The shoulder is where a scene either gains or loses. Make the transition between the hard surface and the soil irregular, with scattered crumbs and sparse vegetation; it unifies the two areas considerably better than an exact, straight edge. Use the same logic where the display meets the edge of the board.
A towing vehicle and figures are not included; they are chosen according to the subject.
