A diorama base with the motif of a ruined wall. Of all the scenic motifs, a wall is the easiest to use: it does not take up much room, yet it gives a model a background for the eye to lean on and turns a single model into a finished composition.
In compositional terms it is a vertical surface that separates a model from its surroundings and keeps it from merging with the background in a display case. It is also rewarding photographically, because you only have to move the light and the texture of the masonry steps forward at once. Broken masonry also exposes the layers below the surface, so you can show plaster, brick and mortar side by side on a single face. And the motif ties you to no particular period.
Never paint brick with one color; shade the individual pieces so that they differ from one another. Apply the mortar thinly and wipe the excess off, so that it stays mainly in the joints. Treat the remains of plaster with a lighter tone and soften their edges gently, so that they do not look stuck on. Finally add dust at the foot of the wall and any growth of greenery on the shaded side.
You get the base on its own; the paints and the setting of the scene remain up to you.
