About product

ASU-85 fenders 1:35: photo-etched set from E.T. Model

This item is not a kit but a photo-etched detail set aimed at the fenders of the ASU-85 self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale. On tracked equipment the fenders are among the most conspicuous places where a plastic model gives its scale away: because of the process, an injection-molded part has to be many times thicker than reality warrants. A metal replacement in photo-etch has the correct thickness, can be realistically bent or damaged and immediately raises the level of the whole model.

The real subject

The ASU-85 was a Soviet self-propelled gun intended for airborne units. It was created on a light tracked chassis derived from an amphibious reconnaissance vehicle and it carried an 85 mm gun in a low enclosed casemate. The design was subordinated to weight and dimensions, so that the vehicle could be transported by air and committed together with the airborne troops. It entered service at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s and served with other armies of the Eastern Bloc as well, so it offers a varied range of markings and camouflage schemes.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the original plastic fenders off with a saw or a fine burr and sand the surface flat, and only then glue the metal replacement on. Make the bends in a bending tool, and on long parts work in sections, so that the edge stays straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally a gel one, which gives time for lining up. The fenders benefit greatly from a slight bend and a suggested dent from use. Degrease them before painting and spray on a primer for metal; finish with a wash in the corners and dust pigments on the lower edges.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet and Eastern European equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the excessive thickness of plastic fenders
  • More experienced builders used to working with metal and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Diorama builders who want a vehicle with the marks of real service

The package contains only photo-etched parts. The base kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It replaces the plastic fenders of the vehicle with thin metal photo-etched parts that have a thickness corresponding to the scale.

Yes, the plastic fenders have to be removed and the surface sanded, so that the metal replacement seats flat.

It is not. This is an accessory; the kit itself has to be bought separately.

Bend the metal fenders slightly and suggest a dent from use, then emphasize the edges with a wash and the lower part with dust pigments.
