This photo-etched set in 1:35 scale is meant for completing a plastic kit of the Soviet ASU-85 airborne self-propelled gun in its 1956 version. The package holds photo-etched brass parts, that is an accessory for the modeler rather than the vehicle itself. The set is designed for the Trumpeter 01588 kit.
The ASU-85 was a tracked self-propelled gun of the Soviet airborne forces. It was based on a light tracked chassis and carried an 85 mm gun in a fixed, low superstructure with no turret. The vehicle was designed so that it could be carried by air and give airborne units firepower against armored targets. Characteristic features are the low silhouette, the clean shape of the frontal armor and a series of small fittings on the upper surface of the hull, which are difficult to produce in plastic.
Brass is smooth and greasy both from the factory and from your hands, and paint will not hold on it without preparation. So before painting, wash the parts in warm water with a drop of dish soap, rinse them and let them dry without wiping them with your fingers. Next comes a thin primer for metal, ideally sprayed, which gives the surface something to grip. Apply the paint itself in several very thin coats; a heavy coat floods the fine structure of the photo-etched parts and wipes out the very thing the set is bought for. Check fine mesh and perforations against the light, so that they stay see-through.
A photo-etched set is an accessory for modelers; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
