The kit from the Italian brand Italeri brings the support variant of the eight-wheeled heavy reconnaissance armored car in 1:35 scale. It is an injection-molded plastic model, that is a classic for which ordinary modeling equipment is enough. Italeri also makes a sister variant of the same family, so the two can be built side by side and the differences between the versions then show nicely.
At the close of the Second World War the Sd. Kfz. 234 family was among the most mobile German reconnaissance vehicles. It was built on a long eight-wheeled hull, it had drive and steering on all wheels and a second driver's station for reversing at full speed, which counts for more in reconnaissance than armor. Power came from an air-cooled diesel engine that coped well with dust and frost alike. The 234/3 version exchanged the turret for an open superstructure with a short 7.5 cm gun, whose stubby barrel earned machines like this the nickname Stummel, meaning stump. Its task was direct fire support for reconnaissance patrols.
An eight-wheeled chassis deserves attention when the axles are being lined up, otherwise the model stands crooked in a display case. The open superstructure can be seen into, so it pays to paint the interior before the hull is roofed over. Late-war camouflage tends to be varied and suits soft transitions sprayed freehand. Bring out the dust and mud with pigments mainly on the wheels and in the wheel arches.
