About product

D.H. 100 Vampire Mk.1 1:72 (Amodel)

Plastic kit of the British de Havilland D.H. 100 Vampire jet fighter in the first production Mk.1 version, in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian firm Amodel. The model is injection-molded in plastic and completed by a clear part for the canopy and a decal sheet. Amodel builds on so-called short-run technology: the parts have somewhat heavier gates, there are no locating pins and the joints are tuned by sanding. In return for that work, however, it offers subjects that are not made in large production runs.

The real subject

The Vampire was the second jet fighter taken into service with the Royal Air Force (RAF). It took shape while the Second World War was still on, but never saw combat. Its identifying features are the short stressed-skin fuselage pod with the cockpit and the engine and a pair of tail booms joined by the horizontal tail surface: this layout shortened the engine jet pipe and cut the thrust losses of the centrifugal-flow turbojets of the day. The Mk.1 was the first production form of the machine; the Vampire then served with a number of other countries and, in training versions, flew for a long time after it left the front line.

Building and painting tips

Dry-fit the parts before gluing and expect to tune the joints, above all at the booms and the pod. Use thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush, which runs into the seam. The cockpit and the front section may need balancing during the build, as a model with a nosewheel is apt to sit back on its tail. Lay down a primer before painting; natural metal or the postwar silver shades are best sprayed with an airbrush over a smooth surface. Use a gloss clear coat under the decals and knock it back to flat once they are on.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of British and postwar jet aircraft
  • collectors in 1:72 scale interested in early jets
  • more experienced builders who do not mind a short-run kit
  • anyone building the development line of the first jet fighters

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. A short-run kit has heavier gates and joints with no locating pins, so it calls for dry-fitting and sanding. For a second or third model it is a manageable build, though.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and paints, glue and any accessories have to be bought separately.

The Mk.1 was the first production form of the machine. The later versions differed in engine, wing and armament, so the decals and details are not interchangeable between them either.

The package holds plastic sprues, a clear part for the canopy and decals. The exact number of parts is given in the instructions in the box.
