A set of supplementary photo-etched parts in 1:35 scale for a model of the German Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.C half-track carrier. Thin metal sheet replaces the plastic parts wherever they would be unrealistically thick.

The Sd.Kfz.251 was a German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War. At the front it had steerable wheels, behind them a tracked running gear and a body with sloped armor walls. The fighting compartment was open at the top, so that the troops carried could dismount quickly over the rear. The figure one in the designation belongs to the basic version for carrying infantry, and the letter C to the production series, which you recognize by the one-piece front wall of the engine compartment and by the tool boxes along the sides of the body.
The set brings supplementary parts etched from thin metal sheet. Photo-etched parts are used where injection-molded plastic would have to be far thicker than the real thickness of the item for reasons of production: grilles, eyes, hinges, clips, holders and other flat small parts. The coverage of the sheet and the kit the set is cut for are given in the instructions of the manufacturer, so check the match with your own model beforehand.
Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp blade on a hard backing, not with nippers, which would deform the thin sheet. Sand the remaining stub with a fine file. Make the bends over a sharp edge or in a bending tool, always along the etched score on the back of the part. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue in a minute amount, best of all applied with the tip of a wire. Before painting, degrease the sheet and go over it with a base coat, or the finish will not hold on the smooth metal.
