Wheels for the Sd.Kfz. 7

The set replaces the front steered wheels of the Sd.Kfz. 7 half-track tractor in 1:35. The tread corresponds to the common pattern, that is the one that appeared most often on vehicles of this type. For the builder it is a practical choice: there is no need to track down which tires his particular example had, and yet he gets a legible and consistent tread.

Why the front wheels in particular

On a half-track all the attention is usually fixed on the tracks and the road wheels. At the front, though, stands a pair of tires that nothing covers and that, seen from the side and from the front, help create the outline of the vehicle. A simplified tire shape or a blurred tread is noticed there at once. The exchange is quick all the same and does not touch the rest of the build.

Building and painting tips

• Wash and degrease the wheels before painting, otherwise the paint will not take hold on the smooth surface.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder flat.
• Apply the paint in thin coats; a thick coat clogs the grooves and the pattern is lost.
• Paint the rubber dark gray and deal with the wheel hub separately, as the transition is clearly visible.
• Fit the wheels dry first and check the wheel track and that they stand square.
• Super glue proves itself for joining them to the model, as the joint area is small.
