The Soviet helmet SSh-39/40 in 1:35 scale is an accessory for figures — a separate steel helmet for conversions and for more accurate headgear on a soldier.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set offers a helmet for a figure in 1:35 scale. It is not a model and not a whole figure but a separate part with which the helmet cast in one piece with the head in a plastic kit is replaced. A separately cast helmet has a thinner edge and a cleaner inner edge, which on such a small part can be seen at first glance. The same subject is also made in further scales, so the scale is a distinguishing detail.
The SSh-39 and SSh-40 helmets formed the basic protective headgear of the Soviet soldier from the end of the 1930s. Both have a practically identical dome shape with a short edge drawn out around the circumference; they differ mainly in the attachment of the inner fitting, which shows from the outside in the number of rivets on the dome. The helmet stayed in service long after the Second World War and appears on later figures as well. For a modeler it is one of the most easily recognized shapes, so it pays off to have it accurate.
First separate the part from the casting system with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and level the trace of the sprue gate with a finer-grit sandpaper. If the set is cast in resin, wash it in lukewarm water with a detergent before painting to rid it of residues of the release agent, and choose the glue according to the material: on resin a cyanoacrylate super glue, on plastic parts a thin glue for plastic. Sand resin wet and with protection for your airways.
Paint the helmet after fitting, or the other way round before it, depending on whether you want it set on a head or hung on equipment. Build the base green shade up thinly, so that the edge of the rim does not disappear; accentuate the circumference and the rivets with a dry brush, and underline the transition between the dome and the rim with a dark wash instead. Deal with the inside of the helmet, if it is visible, in a different color than the outside. A matte varnish at the end will unify the surface and settle the patina.
This is an accessory for a figure, not a model on its own. The set is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
