A photo-etched set for the Soviet KV-2 tank in 1:35 scale from the Czech maker Eduard replaces plastic parts with thin metal where the real thing had sheet metal.

This is not a kit of the vehicle but a more extensive supplementary photo-etched set in 1:35 scale. It contains parts of thin photo-etched metal that replace or supplement the plastic components of a kit in places where an injection mold cannot keep to a realistic thickness. The extent of the set matches the fact that the KV-2 has a tall angular turret and large flat surfaces on which every detail is clearly visible.
Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum thickness that it cannot go below. Everything that on the real thing is made of thin sheet metal, that is the fenders, covers, brackets, tool clamps and grilles, is therefore necessarily more massive in plastic than the scale calls for. Photo-etched metal works in tenths of a millimeter, so an edge looks like the edge of sheet metal and not like a rounded plastic transition. On a vehicle with such pronounced flat surfaces as the KV-2, that difference is very noticeable on a finished model.
Separate the parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface rather than by twisting, so that they do not ripple. Make long bends in an etch bender along the whole length at once. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on a smooth surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate in a minimal amount. With vehicles it pays to assemble the running gear and the inner parts before you close the hull up, and to fit the photo-etched parts in the order in which you can still reach them. Photo-etched fenders are worth deforming slightly so that they do not look like a new component. At the end the weathering is completed by a dark wash into the recesses and pigments on the running gear.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, glue, primer and paints are not included in the package.
