An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet NKL-16 aerosan in 1:35 scale from the Trumpeter brand. The model captures an unusual snow vehicle: a boxy hull on skis driven by an aircraft engine with a pusher propeller at the back. The package holds the hull parts, the ski units, the propeller, the engine and photo-etched parts together with a decal sheet.
The aerosan (aerosani in Russian) was a Soviet snow vehicle for moving through deep snow and over the frozen waters of northern Russia. The NKL-16 of 1942 was an improved armored version; a plywood hull with light armor protected the crew and an M-11 aircraft engine with a pusher propeller drove it from the rear. The vehicle slid on four skis and carried light machine gun armament. It was used for reconnaissance, communications, transport and patrols where wheeled and tracked equipment alike got stuck in the snow.
Assemble the hull and the engine with the propeller first; watch the level seating of all four skis so that the vehicle stands correctly. Glue the parts with thin modeling cement on the plastic and the fine photo-etched parts with super glue, then apply a primer. You will get the typical winter finish with white over the base color showing through; suggest wear and scraped snow with a drybrush. Bring out the propeller and the skis with a fine rub and light pigments, as if the vehicle had been throwing snow around.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
