About product

Fasteners of anti-radiation cladding 1:35 - a Hauler photo-etched set

A photo-etched accessory set from the Czech maker Hauler meant for refining the surface of postwar Soviet tanks. It is not a kit: the set holds small photo-etched parts that are fitted to a model built from a plastic kit obtained separately. It is precisely such details that decide whether a finished model makes the impression of a scaled-down original.

The real subject

Postwar Soviet tanks carried a layer of anti-radiation cladding on the outer surface of the turret and the hull. The material, with a high content of hydrogen, damps penetrating radiation and raises the protection of the crew. The cladding was fastened to the armor by regular rows of small circular fasteners, which are very plainly apparent on the real machines and in photographs and give the surface a characteristic rhythm. Plastic kits usually carry these fasteners only in a simplified form, or leave them out altogether.

Building and painting tips

Cut the photo-etched parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out by twisting - the sheet is thin and the edges will bend. Sand the surplus of the fret tab down with a fine file. Before gluing, degrease the sheet with spirit and do not touch it with bare fingers. It is glued with a minimal amount of super glue, which you take up with the tip of a toothpick; a drop applied straight from the bottle will drown a small detail. Mark the placing out beforehand with a pencil or make a paper template, so that the rows sit regularly. When painting, spray thinly and in several coats: a heavy coat of primer or paint can flood such a fine relief completely. Drybrushing and a lighter shade at the end will bring the fasteners out.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build postwar Soviet armored equipment.
  • Builders who want to replace simplified plastic detail.
  • More experienced modelers with experience of photo-etch.
  • Competition and display-case models, where the surface matters.

The accessory set is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

They hold the layer of anti-radiation cladding on the armor, that is, of material that damps penetrating radiation. On the surface of the turret and the hull they form characteristic regular rows.

A sharp scalpel, a hard surface, tweezers, a fine file and super glue will do. A toothpick proves its worth for dosing a minimal amount of glue.

For postwar Soviet tanks on which a kit leaves these small fasteners out or has them only in simplified form. Check the particular type against photographs of your machine.
