Painting tips

Clean the accessory before painting and sand down any small irregularities; depending on the material it may be worth strengthening the surface with a primer. Stone and mortar come alive with layering — a basic gray or sand tone, then a dark wash into the joints and a light dry brush on the edges. Wood looks convincing when a hint of gray weathering shows through under the brown. Patina at the foot of the well helps too: damp, moss, mud and the remains of water around the rim.
