The motif of a sacred gateway moves a setting into another world. A portal with a carved reveal gives a figure a dignified backdrop and at the same time states unambiguously that the scene belongs in a fantasy world, not in an ordinary town street or on a battlefield.
The entrance to a temple works as a frame: whatever you put in the middle of it gains the attention. A symmetrical structure does tempt you to stand the figure exactly in the center, but the scene benefits when it moves to one side and breaks the symmetry. The details of the reveal also come out most strongly when seen from below, which is worth reckoning with when you choose the height of the display case.
A warm sandstone tone is built from ocher and light gray, with each layer applied thinly so that the shade beneath shows through. Draw the reliefs out with a dark glaze and then go carefully over them with the edge of a dry brush. A greenish bloom belongs exclusively at the foot of the masonry and in the shaded joints; anywhere else it looks out of place and cheap. Gateways will take gold or copper accents only in small measure, but they change the sense of the whole a great deal.
The base is ready to be painted; the result stands or falls on patience in applying thin glazes to the relief surfaces.
