About product

Tiger I Early Production Sd.Kfz.181 1:35 (Border Model)

The kit in 1:35 scale captures the German Tiger I heavy tank in the early production variant, listed under the designation Sd.Kfz.181. It is an injection-molded plastic model, supplied unassembled and unpainted. The particular contents of the package, the number of parts, the type of tracks and whether photo-etch or resin parts are included are given on the data sheet enclosed with the kit.

The real subject

The Tiger I was a heavy tank put into production in 1942. It carried an 88 mm gun with a long barrel derived from an antiaircraft gun, and thick frontal armor with mostly vertical faces, without the pronounced slope that came to the fore on later designs. The running gear was made up of interleaved road wheels, which improved the distribution of weight but complicated maintenance. The early machines differed from the later ones in a number of details: rubber-tired road wheels, a different form of commander's cupola, wading equipment and filter units at the rear of the hull. Its high combat weight placed demands on the transmission and on transport, for which narrower transport tracks were fitted.

Building and painting tips

On this vehicle work from the bottom up: finish the hull, the running gear and the internal surfaces that a brush can no longer reach once it is closed. Keep the road wheels removable if you can and paint them separately from the tracks. After the base color apply a filter or a thin wash so that the detail comes into play, and only then build the mud and dust effects with pigments. The interleaved running gear calls for patience in filling the gaps; apply the pigment in layers and wipe the excess off with a dry brush. Pick out the metal parts, such as the barrel and the tools, with graphite or a dark metal shade.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of military vehicles with experience of building tanks
  • Collectors of Tiger I variants in a single 1:35 scale
  • Builders who want a model with well-worked running gear
  • Anyone interested in weathering, mud and dust techniques

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The list of the package contents is on the data sheet enclosed with the kit.

The early machines had rubber-tired road wheels, a different form of commander's cupola and wading equipment.

Rather for modelers with experience. The interleaved running gear and the quantity of small parts place demands on careful assembly.

Paint the wheels and tracks separately from the hull, then apply a wash and finally pigments in layers. Wipe excess pigment off with a dry brush.
