A 1:32 decal sheet for two Mustangs of the early B series, one from the legendary group at Debden and the other from a training unit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The early P-51B differs from the later machines at first glance: it has a fuselage decking with no bubble canopy and a cockpit closed by a framed hood, which limited the pilot's view to the rear. Yet it was these aircraft that in the winter and spring of 1944 first escorted the heavy bombers all the way to Berlin and decided the contest for air superiority over Europe.
The first set of markings belongs to a machine named Ill Wind of the 334th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group, the unit based at Debden and famous for taking in veterans from the British squadrons. The dating refers to May 1944. The second aircraft, Rebel Queen, served with the 555th Squadron of the 496th Group, where fresh pilots prepared for operational service. A combination of an operational and a training machine on one sheet is quite unusual.
Check that your kit matches the early B series and does not have a bubble canopy. Lay the designs on a smooth gloss surface and let them dry without moving them. Thin stripes around the fuselage are easier to seat if you cut them into two pieces and join them on the model.
Early Mustangs are among the rewarding subjects precisely because their service was short and photographs of it are rare. A model built to such markings is therefore rarer in a collection than the ubiquitous later forms with a bubble canopy, even among experienced modelers.
