This is neither a kit nor a replacement part, but an aid for painting. The masks stick onto the wheels and set the exact border between the rubber tire band and the rim, so both areas can be sprayed one at a time with no shaking hand. The set is cut for the Type 10 tank kit from Tamiya — wheel diameters and spacings differ between manufacturers, so check before ordering that this is the kit you are building.
The Type 10 is a modern Japanese tank with hydropneumatic suspension that allows the ride height to be changed and the hull to be tilted. It carries five road wheels with a rubber tire band on each side, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The wheels are large against Second World War equipment, with a deeply shaped rim, so the transition between rubber and metal is conspicuous and the eye finds it on a finished model at once. A considerable part of the running gear is also covered by side plates — all the more reason for what stays visible to stand out, and a single wavering line spoils the impression of the whole side.
The commonest mistake is lining the tire band freehand with a brush: the line wavers, comes out wide on one wheel and narrow on the next, and the model then looks as though every tire were worn differently. The second common misstep is paint that is too thick — the coat runs over the edge and floods the scribed transition that carries the whole effect on the wheel. The third is the order of work: paint the wheels only after they are seated on the hull and you cannot reach the inner faces or the lower part that the plates will cover. With a mask stuck to an unseated wheel the border is set by the shape of the cutout and every wheel comes out the same. Lift the mask off while the paint has only flashed off, not after it has fully cured.
