This item is not a model of a vehicle but a photo-etched detail set in thin metal sheet, intended to improve a plastic kit of the BMP-3 in 1:35 scale. Photo-etch can do what injection-molded plastic cannot: parts a few tenths of a millimeter thick, sharp edges and regular perforations. It is typically used to replace grilles, covers, loops, brackets and other thin-walled elements of the exterior. The designation in the name refers to the basic extent of the set in the maker's range, that is to the main external details, not to a complete rebuild of the interior.
The BMP-3 is a Russian infantry fighting vehicle with unusually strong combined armament: a 100 mm gun completed by a rapid-fire 30 mm autocannon and machine guns. The vehicle is amphibious, with the engine at the rear and light armor that puts the emphasis on low weight and mobility. The United Arab Emirates are among the most important foreign users of the type and their vehicles tend to be adapted to service in a desert environment. It is precisely these export vehicles that are a rewarding subject thanks to their striking sand camouflage and equipment different from Russian production examples.
Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out. Make the bends in a bending tool or between metal jaws, so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, or else with solder; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Degrease the sheet before painting and spray on a base coat suitable for metal, otherwise the paint will chip off the smooth surface. Desert shades come out with dust pigments and light drybrushing on the edges.
