A photo-etched accessory set that adds anti-HEAT wire-mesh armor of the so-called bedspring type to a model of the Soviet T-34/85 medium tank. The model of the vehicle itself is not in the package; the set is fitted to a kit in 1:35 scale already obtained. Photo-etched parts are supplied flat and are bent to shape before fitting, so the result rests on careful work and patience. The number of parts and of the templates enclosed is stated on the box.
Wire-mesh screens were added to T-34/85 tanks in the closing fighting of 1945 as protection against hand-held anti-armor weapons with a shaped-charge warhead. In construction they were simple frames with a wire or bar filling, placed at a stand-off from the hull and the turret. The stand-off was meant to make the warhead go off before it reached the armor. The design was not uniform: the mesh assemblies were made in the field as well as in repair units and differed in extent and in shape. For a model that means such an addition gives the vehicle a markedly different character in silhouette than the clean factory configuration.
Take the photo-etched parts off the fret on a hard surface with a sharp blade, not with nippers. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two edges of a steel ruler, so that the edge comes out sharp and straight. Hold the joints with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a small amount; on larger areas soldering proves itself. Before painting, degrease the whole and spray it with primer, or the paint will not hold on the metal. Paint the mesh separately from the hull and fit it only once the weathering is finished, because working through the mesh with a brush or with pigment goes badly.
It is a photo-etched accessory set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
