A set from the modern Black Dog line, tied thematically to the Iraqi operations begun in 2003. Unlike the individual numbered figures of the same sub-range it is conceived as a group, so it offers a ready-made basis for a scene without having to put the composition together from several separate boxes.
A multi-figure arrangement makes possible what a single figure can never manage, namely showing spacing. In reality a patrol never moves in a huddle; the figures keep their distance and look in different directions. You carry that logic into a diorama by spreading the figures along a track or a wall and leaving larger gaps between them than would seem right on a small base. A longer narrow base therefore usually works better than a square one.
First lay the figures out dry and look at the scene from the viewer's eye level rather than from above. Only then decide which figure is the main one. Paint that one most carefully and take detail away from the rest; the viewer's eye will jump to the most striking one anyway. Apply the dust and mud to all the figures at once, so that the scene holds together as a single moment.
