1:35 U.S.M.C. Mortar Team

Bravo 6 1:35 U.S.M.C. Mortar Team - two resin figures

The set holds two unpainted figures in 1:35 scale cast in resin and complemented by photo-etched parts. The subject is a mortar crew of the US Marine Corps. The manufacturer is Bravo 6, a brand focused on finely sculpted figures. It is an accessory for a diorama, not a kit of equipment - the composition counts on your completing the scene with a firing position, a supply of ammunition and terrain.

Subject and workmanship

A weapon crew is interesting from the point of view of building a scene in that the poses of the figures follow on from each other: the stances are built around a shared center, so the pair forms a legible group. The figures are in field uniform with a load-bearing harness and personal kit, and the photo-etched parts serve for the thin features that cannot be cast finely enough in resin. The detail of the folds of the cloth and of the straps is cast directly in the parts.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand the surfaces; protect your airways while sanding resin. It is glued with cyanoacrylate super glue, and bend the photo-etch over the edge of a ruler. Before gluing the figures down for good, try the whole composition out on the base, so that the poses really do follow on from each other. After applying a primer, build the uniform up from a base tone through the shadows into the lights and add dust and rub-through to the knees and the elbows. Build the skin up in layers and unify the surface with a matte varnish.
