1:35 Windmill Fields [Baseplate Only]

The field below the mill, the board alone

Windmill Fields is a base for a diorama in 1:35 scale with the motif of a cultivated field. The designation in the name has to be taken literally: what you get is the board and nothing else. The windmill the scene is designed as a complement to is sold separately and really is not in this package. Anyone looking for the mill together with its terrain has to acquire both.

What the board offers

The surface is made up of plowed ground with beds of vegetables, specifically with heads of cabbage. A field like that gives a tableau an immediately clear setting: countryside, a farm, the tail end of summer. Military equipment parked in the furrows or infantry advancing across the beds are among the images that have survived in great number from the Netherlands, northern France and Poland.

Advice on finishing

Plowed soil comes alive when two or three further tones are rubbed into the basic brown: the ridges of the furrows lighter, their bottoms darker and damper. Leave the greenery a little dusty, because a freshly green crop in the middle of dry soil comes across as out of place. Make good the edges of the board so that the scene does not end in a sharp cut; a low grassy border or a field balk will hide that transition reliably.

Who the board will serve

• owners of the mill from the same line who are looking for terrain for it
• builders of rural and agricultural tableaux
• modelers looking for a finished base for a single vehicle
• scenes from western and central Europe

The base is unpainted and neither the mill itself nor paints are in it.
