Wooden fencing as a diorama element for a scene in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or a figure but a building accessory that marks out the boundaries of a view and gives it a rural or suburban character. The manufacturer runs the fences as a numbered range, so the builder of a scene can choose from several variants.
A wooden fence is one of the oldest ways of separating your land from the road. It bounds gardens, yards, pastures and the support areas of farm buildings, and in the European and American landscape of the twentieth century it is utterly everywhere. In wartime views it also has a part of its own: it tends to be broken, a panel is missing, vehicles have driven through it. The fence therefore tells the viewer not only where the scene is but also what has happened in it.
It pays not to set the fence parallel to the edge of the base - even a slight turn livens the scene up at once and increases the apparent depth. It is good to leave a way through or a missing panel somewhere, so that the fencing does not read as an impassable wall and the viewer has somewhere to enter with the eye. Along the fence it suits to raise the terrain, add tall grass and weeds at the posts and a beaten track on the side people walk. The fence also works wonderfully as a set piece in the background, hiding the edge of the base and closing the composition off.
