The second number of the figure subject of the crew of a German assault gun in 1:35 scale. Dynamo-Models builds its figure ranges so that the individual numbers follow on from each other: alongside this set the manufacturer has also released StuG Commander, StuG Crew No.1 and a combined package, so the scene around a vehicle can be filled in piece by piece. The abbreviation WSS in the name refers to the German Waffen-SS units of the Second World War and sets the period dress of the figures.
Sturmgeschütz III assault guns accompanied the infantry, and against armored vehicles they were helped by the low silhouette the fixed turretless superstructure gave them. The crew consisted of four men - the commander, the gunner, the loader and the driver. The crews of assault guns originally came under the artillery rather than the armored arm, and their dress practice matched that: a short close-fitting jacket, headphones and a map case belonged to the usual kit. The commander often stayed in the open hatch or right on the superstructure both on the move and during halts, where he had a better view than the vision ports inside.
A crew beside a vehicle is one of the few ways to show a viewer the size of the machine. So work with differences in height - a figure on the hull, on a fender or seated by the track reads better than a figure placed beside the model on a flat surface. Aim the axis of the figures' gazes at one point; that gives the scene a story. If you paint the figures yourself, set the shade of the uniform at least a tone apart from the shade of the vehicle, otherwise the figure will visually merge with the hull; a final fine dusting will then join both parts of the scene together.
