About product

Side armor plates for the Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär, late version, 1:35 scale (Voyager Model)

A photo-etched add-on set from Voyager Model replaces the plastic side armor plates, the so-called Schürzen, on a model of the German Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär assault gun in the late fit. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory for a model you already have. Photo-etched brass makes it possible to capture both the thickness of the sheet and the fine hangers in a way injection-molded plastic cannot. The set is intended for the Tamiya 35353 kit.

The real subject

The Sturmpanzer IV, known by the nickname Brummbär, was a German tracked carrier for a heavy 150 mm howitzer built on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank. It served for direct fire support of infantry, especially in built-up terrain. The late production series differed from the early machines in a modified superstructure and a different solution for attaching the side plates. The thin hung plates were to disrupt a hit before it landed on the armor proper of the hull and on the running gear.

Building and painting tips

The main reason to reach for photo-etched parts on side plates is the thickness in scale. Injection-molded plastic cannot sensibly be made thinner than about half a millimeter, which in 1:35 scale is many times the real thing, whereas brass sheet comes substantially closer to reality. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers, which will ripple the edge. It is precisely on these plates that slight deformation pays off: a mild dish, a missing piece or a bent corner comes across convincingly, because the plates were easily damaged in service. Before painting, degrease the brass and use a base meant for metal, otherwise the paint will chip off during handling.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who already have the matching kit in 1:35 scale and want to raise its level of detail
  • Builders of German equipment of the Second World War with an interest in the exact thickness of armor plates
  • More experienced modelers with basic practice in working with photo-etched parts
  • Diorama builders who want a vehicle with traces of damage from service

The set is an accessory, not a model. It does not hold the kit of the vehicle, glue or paints.

FAQ

No. This is a photo-etched add-on set, which improves a plastic kit in 1:35 scale you have already bought. The model of the vehicle is not part of the package.

A sharp scalpel, a hard surface, tweezers and cyanoacrylate. On longer plates a photo-etch bender, or at least two metal rulers and a flat plate, helps markedly.

Yes, that is our recommendation. Degrease the brass first and lay on a base meant for metal. Without it the paint is easily rubbed off during handling of the model.
