About product

MASTER 1:350 - the armament barrels of the IJN Mikasa

A metal detail set for a model of the Japanese pre-dreadnought battleship in 1:350 scale. It is not a kit but replacement parts: four barrels of 30.5 cm caliber for the two twin turrets and fourteen barrels of 15.2 cm caliber for the casemate battery. It is precisely that numerous secondary battery that makes the set a sensible purchase - fourteen identical plastic barrels can hardly be drilled out by hand.

The real subject

Mikasa was built in Britain at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and represents the typical pre-dreadnought line: heavy artillery in two end turrets and a strong medium battery in casemates along the sides of the hull. The ship survives to this day as a museum exhibit, so there is rich photographic documentation for faithful painting and weathering.

Fitting and painting tips

With the casemate barrels it pays to work methodically: first cut off all the plastic barrels, then open the holes out gradually with a single drill and only glue at the very end, so that they all have the same projection. It helps to make a paper template with a scribed line. Glue with gel super glue, whose drop can be dosed onto a metal shank with a pin. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal; in the casemates, where the barrel projects from the armor only a short way, it is enough to darken the muzzle by oxidation and give the barrel no further coat. When masking the hull it is better to leave the barrels temporarily unfitted.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of historical ship models in 1:350 scale.
  • Modelers who want clean muzzles on a numerous casemate battery.
  • Combining with photo-etched sets for the same scale.
  • Collectors building a museum piece with an emphasis on detail.

The set is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. The ship model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, the package contains only the turned metal barrels. The battleship model in 1:350 scale is bought separately.

There are fourteen of them and they all have to look the same. Drilling such small plastic parts by hand rarely comes out evenly, whereas a metal barrel has the bore already made.

Gel super glue or epoxy. Ordinary plastic cement will not join metal.

It is not necessary. The metal surface can be darkened with an oxidizing solution, which keeps the sharp edge of the bore. If you do paint, use a primer for metal.
