About product

MASTER 1:350 battleship Borodino - turned armament barrels

A metal set of turned metal barrels in 1:350 scale from the Polish brand MASTER, intended for a model of the Russian battleship of the Borodino class of the early twentieth century. According to its name the set covers four calibers: 305 mm in four pieces, 152 mm in twelve pieces, 75 mm in twenty pieces and 47 mm likewise in twenty pieces. It is not a ship kit but a replacement for the plastic barrels in a kit you already own.

Why naval barrels are swapped for metal ones

A ship model in 1:350 scale has its armament spread across dozens of tiny barrels, and it is exactly these that decide whether the finished ship looks sharp or soft. Injection-molded plastic at this size cannot make a barrel slender enough; the parts also tend to be bent, their muzzles blind, and once the parting line is sanded away they lose their roundness. Turned metal holds a constant diameter along its whole length, the barrel is straight and the muzzle has a real bore with no need to drill. On ships it also matters that all the barrels of one caliber look identical and that in twin or multiple turrets they keep a constant spacing. A metal barrel also survives your touching the model during the build or while carrying it.

Installation and painting tips

Work caliber by caliber: replace the largest barrels first, then the smaller ones in descending order. Cut the plastic barrel off at the face of the turret or the mounting and drill the hole with a hand drill at the smallest diameter that will still take the shank. Place the tiny 47 mm and 75 mm barrels with fine-jawed tweezers and dose the glue with the tip of a needle, otherwise a creeping drop will flood the surrounding detail. Before painting, degrease the whole model and use a primer for metal, so that the shade matches the plastic around it. A darker metallic tone suits the barrels; a fine wash in the recesses then separates the armament from the superstructure. Fit the smallest calibers last of all.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Borodino class battleship model in 1:350 scale
  • modelers who want a uniform and sharp look across the whole armament
  • anyone combining metal barrels with etched sets of railings and superstructures
  • patient builders, since these are dozens of tiny parts

The set is supplied unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
