A veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing for the plastic kit of the battleship USS Missouri in 1:350 scale. It is not a kit: the veneer is glued straight onto the plastic deck of a model you buy separately. The shapes are cut for one particular kit, Very Fire VF350003, so check before buying that this is the one you are building.
Injected plastic can suggest a plank pattern only by engraving, whose depth is set by the technology of the mold. Once paint is sprayed on, part of those grooves fills in and the area flattens out. Veneer gets around the problem differently: the surface really is wood, so it has a fine texture of its own, slight differences of shade between neighboring planks and a matte refraction of light that varnished plastic imitates only with difficulty. In 1:350 scale that difference is visible on the large deck of a battleship even from an ordinary distance.
A large area means the veneer cannot be glued down in one movement. Divide the work into sections, peel the covering film off gradually and press the material from the longitudinal axis out to the sides with a soft roller or the edge of a finger through paper. Degrease the plastic before gluing and check that it is flat; a sunken or rippled deck will not be hidden under thin wood, but will stand out instead. We recommend going over the finished deck with a thin coat of matte varnish, which protects the wood during the rest of the build and prevents soiling from glue and paints.
The deck is not a model on its own. The plastic kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
