A veneer deck with a self-adhesive backing and pre-printed plank laying for the plastic kit of the large cruiser USS Guam CB-2 in 1:350 scale, completed by photo-etched parts. According to the name this is the blue finish of the deck, that is, the variant with a dark blue-gray surface instead of natural wood. It is not a kit; the accessory is glued onto the plastic deck of the Hobby Boss 86514 model.

The blue variant and what it is for

American vessels of the Second World War often had their deck areas painted in a dark blue-gray rather than left as natural wood. The modeler who wants that look and at the same time does not want to lose the texture of the plank laying gets exactly that compromise here: the surface is wooden and the plank pattern remains, but the shade matches a painted deck. No painting is needed any more, which also removes the risk of a spray coat clogging the engraving.

Usage tips

Before taking the covering film off, lay the veneer on dry and check against the light that all the cut-outs fit the turret bases, hatchways and winches. It is exactly this step that is most often skipped, and it cannot be put right afterwards. When gluing, work in sections and smooth the area out from the middle. Leave the photo-etched parts until the end, once the deck is seated; separate them with a sharp knife and glue them with super glue applied on the tip of a wire, so that any excess does not run onto the wood. Stains from cyanoacrylate on blue veneer can only be removed with great difficulty.
