A detail accessory to a model of the American heavy cruiser, not a standalone kit. The set contains nine turned barrels of 8 inch caliber for the three triple turrets and eight barrels of 5 inch caliber for the dual-purpose artillery. The metal parts are supplemented by a resin trunnion mounting, thanks to which the barrels sit in the turret in the right position and can be set with a suggestion of elevation.
A plastic barrel in this scale has a blind muzzle, so it has to be drilled with a micro drill; on the 5 inch caliber that means a hole of around a tenth of a millimeter and the bit likes to wander off to the side. A turned part comes with a finished bore true to its axis. The second gain is geometry: on a triple turret all three barrels have to be the same length and parallel, otherwise the turret looks cross-eyed. Metal also does not flex and bend at every touch of a finger, which on a ship model with dense railings and rigging is appreciated during the final assembly.
First wash the resin part in warm water with dish soap to free it of mold release agent, otherwise neither glue nor paint will hold on it. Cut off the plastic barrels and open out the holes in the turret so that the metal shank fits without pressure. Use gel grade cyanoacrylate for gluing, or epoxy on larger areas. Painting: degrease, a primer for metal, then naval gray according to the chosen scheme. The barrel muzzles come out better with dark oxidation than with black paint, which fills in the fine edge of the bore.
