About product

USS Los Angeles of the Flight III class (688 Improved) — nuclear submarine, 1:350 scale, Riich Models

Injection-molded plastic kit of the American Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine in the improved Flight III (688 Improved) configuration in 1:350 scale from Riich Models. The model consists of a smooth full hull with a low sail, fine surface detail and photo-etched extras. The decals allow several specific boats of this class to be built. The exact parts count and the scope of the photo-etch are given in the instructions in the box.

The real subject

The Los Angeles class was for decades the backbone of the American nuclear attack submarine force. These were fast, quiet boats built to find and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships and to protect their own formations. The improved 688 Improved (Flight III) series brought, among other things, vertical launch tubes for guided missiles, a strengthened hull for operations under the ice and a revised arrangement of the forward diving planes. These submarines served in many operations during the Cold War and afterward.

Building and painting tips

On a submarine a seamless hull is the key thing — fill and sand the seam between the parts carefully, with respiratory protection. Think through the position of the masts and the periscopes before you close up the sail. A base coat, a single dark shade with an airbrush and only restrained weathering are the way to go; American submarines tend to be relatively clean in service. Glue the photo-etched items with cyanoacrylate glue and seat the model as the instructions show.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in American nuclear submarines of the Cold War
  • For collectors of submarines in 1:350 scale
  • For modelers who enjoy perfecting a smooth, seamless hull
  • For a striking yet undemanding build

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
