A title from the Ultra Detail Guide series of the publisher Komakai, devoted to the McLaren MP4/8 single-seater. It is a publication for modelers rather than a kit, and it keeps to one car and one season.
The MP4/8 raced in the 1993 season and it was the last McLaren that Ayrton Senna drove. The team had no works engine supply at the time and ran a customer Ford V8, yet it held its place at the front of the grid. Technically it was the peak of the electronic era: active suspension, a semi-automatic gearbox and traction control. Senna won five races with the car, among them the memorable rain at Donington, where he passed most of the field on the first lap, and the closing Adelaide, where he celebrated his last victory in this team's colors. Michael Andretti and Mika Häkkinen took turns in the second car during the year. Second place in the final world championship standings was left to Senna, because his rival had the technical upper hand that year.
Cars with active suspension have a densely packed chassis and a great many lines that are visible once the body is removed. Reference material focused on a single car saves a lot of guessing over the shape of parts here. It also helps in deciding on the form of the nose and the side deflectors, because these changed over the course of the year.
