Note: this is not an aircraft kit. It is a modeling aid, a set of shaped plugs of springy foam that fit the landing gear bays exactly and close them reliably for the duration of spraying. The set is shaped to the bays of a particular kit: the F-4 Phantom from Academy in 1:48 scale.
A landing gear bay is a deep, busy cavity. A modeler paints and details it as one of the first things, and then has to protect it before starting to spray the outside of the fuselage and the wings. Masking such a cavity with tape and wisps of cotton is slow and still does not seal: paint runs in over the edges and the finished interior is ruined. A plug solves the problem in one step: it goes into the bay, the model is sprayed and once dry the plug comes out. The foam compresses slightly in the opening and seals itself, so it holds with no glue. It also protects the bay while sanding and from settling dust and sanding slurry.
A plug is shaped to the particular bay of a particular kit, which is why the sets are not interchangeable. This one is for Academy in 1:48. Other sets of plugs for the Phantom exist as well, for kits from other makers (Meng, for instance) and for other scales (1:72 for Hasegawa, for instance). Please check whose kit you are building and in what scale before buying, as a plug for Academy will not fit another kit even in the same scale.
The F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat twin-engine multirole fighter and one of the most widespread combat aircraft of the Cold War. It flew with the Air Force, the Navy and the Marine Corps and served in a number of other countries. You know it at first glance by the dihedral of the outer wing panels and the anhedral tailplanes. The designations B, C, D, J and N correspond to different versions, naval ones and Air Force ones, which differ in equipment and in airframe details. The set of plugs, however, is tied to a particular kit, not to a version of the real aircraft.
This is not a model and not model parts; it is a masking aid bought separately. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
