Painting masks for a P-51 B/C model with the sliding Malcolm Hood canopy in 1:72 scale from SX-Art.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set serves to cover the glazing during spraying and is cut to the shape of the bulged sliding canopy by which the B and C version Mustangs differed from the later bubble cockpits. Thanks to it the modeler sprays the canopy frames and the smaller windows together with the surrounding finish, so touching up with a brush is unnecessary and the lines keep a uniform width. It is not decals or replacement glazing but an aid for the painting stage.
The P-51B and P-51C versions still had a high fuselage spine and a framed cockpit, which offered the pilot poor visibility to the rear and to the sides. British workshops answered that with a bulged sliding canopy that caught on under the name Malcolm. It reached a considerable part of the RAF Mustang Mk.III machines and some American aircraft used it as well. After the conversion the cockpit widened the field of view markedly and became an easily recognizable mark of these versions.
Before fitting the templates, free the canopy of grease from your fingers and let the base cure completely. Spray perpendicular to the edge of the mask and preferably in two passes; a heavy coat tends to creep under. Once you have taken the set off, even out any small shortcomings with a fine brush rather than by sanding the whole area.
