This Kelik set deals with the inside of the cockpit of the P-40N fighter and it is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. According to the name the elements are worked out three-dimensionally and already finished in color, so the finest painting in the whole build falls away. Especially on a type whose cockpit is often shown open, this is a step that is immediately visible on a finished model. The dimensions of the elements match the cockpit of the Academy kit.
The Curtiss P-40N was the last mass-produced form of the Warhawk and at the same time the lightest. The manufacturer steadily took weight out of it, lowered the spine behind the cockpit for the sake of the view to the rear, and some machines received a smaller number of machine guns. The aircraft served in American, Australian, New Zealand and Chinese use, mainly over the Pacific and in Burma. It won its fame through toughness and a low price rather than through performance at altitude, in which it lagged behind the competition of the day.
Assemble the cockpit dry in advance so that you know which surfaces will be visible once the fuselage is glued together. The base has to be smooth so that the elements adhere over their whole area and no bubble is left anywhere. Once the inside is finished we recommend patinating the depths very lightly and, the other way round, gently lightening the sharp edges – the cockpit then stops looking like a flat print. The manufacturer's instructions always take precedence over general advice.
